PRESS RELEASE - 10/10/2024

QUICKSHOP FIRE

Saturday night (October 5 2024) at 21:23, Dispatch was notified of a fire at quickshop apartments – flames visible. Within two minutes, Haines Borough Police Department responded and Haines Volunteer Fire Department’s Engine One was on scene within 6 minutes with 6 on board, followed directly by Rescue One with 4 on board. Tanker 5 was on scene within 10 minutes, and Medic One posted up to provide fire support. Klehini Valley Volunteer Fire Department sent both Engine 77 and Engine 84 to assist. The commercial structure fire located at the intersection of Haines Highway and Mud Bay escalated quickly - the structure contained the Haines' Quick Shop, Outfitter Liquor, Outfitter Sporting Goods, Mike's Bikes & Boards, along with residential apartments on the second story.  All occupants of the residential apartments and the commercial business self-evacuated and there are no reported injuries or fatalities.  A Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) from Fairbanks arrived yesterday to conduct an investigation into both the cause and the origin of the fire- that report is pending. The structure is a total loss with the last report of damages exceeding $3.5 million.  There are currently no indications of criminal activity, and the fire marshal investigation is on-going.
